How do you keep your dog cool? How do you keep yourself cool? If it to hot for you or you can barely take the heat then it is too hot for your dog. Here is a big list I compiled from all over the Internet.
- DON’T LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A PARKED CAR! This should be obvious!
- Grooming, I never really thought of this but it removes loose fur or matted fur that can add to heat building up.
- Provide ice packs or wet towels for the dog to lay on
- Add ice cubes to the water dish
- Put out a kiddie pool with shallow cool water or sprinkler
- Make sure there are shady areas, do you like standing in the sun
- Keep the water dish full at all times
- Replace part of their dry food with canned
- Avoid hot surfaces, streets and sidewalks can get very hot, consider booty’s to protect their paws. If you can’t walk on it barefoot don’t expect them to
- Do not use a muzzle when it is hot. Muzzles can restrict the dog from heavy panting required to keep the cool.
- Time you walks for the cooler parts of the day, early morning or late afternoon walks, you both will enjoy the walks better.
- Don’t tie your dog out on hot days, they could get tangled and trapped in the sun. Remember shade
- Frozen treats
- Shave, I included this only because for some dog breeds it is an option. Shaving also ads the risk of sub burn.
- Not all dogs are good candidates for shaving and it could also actually make them hotter.
- Dogs with double coats can be adversely affected by shaving.
- Be creative, tie wet bandanna around your dogs neck
- Let your dog dig!
- Go swimming, don’t have a place to swim. Get a kiddie wading pool. The dog can walk or lay in it.
- Leave you dog home, we have a couple of dogs we usually take everywhere. During the summer they don’t go with us quite as often.
What do you do?
