This Old Doghouse

Ugly Doghouse

We are required to have an insulated doghouse. Now our dogs rarely spend long periods of time outdoors, but it is “the law!”

So we could get away with just about anything we could throw together. We would like something that at least looks halfway nice. Now I have built a couple of doghouses over the years. The one thing in common they had was their weight. They were heavy! It would be nice if the doghouse was not as heavy as those old doghouses were.

What are our requirements for a doghouse?

  1. insulated for legal reasons
  2. look nice, fancy is not necessary
  3. try to keep it lighter than past doghouses
A-Frame Doghouse

A-Frame Doghouse

As a young boy, I liked A-frame houses. I thought they would be really neat to live in. After looking at images of A-frame houses, the “that would be neat to live in” feeling is back.

This style of doghouse could be inexpensive to build and customizable to suit one’s desire. Leave it simple as in the image or add your personal flare. This design would be easy to build.

Crooked Doghouse

This could be built as whimsically as your imagination and skill would allow, with straight or curved lines this style reminds me of Dr Suess or Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, with their oddly shaped furniture.

This style is basically a simple doghouse with disproportionate dimensions and you could add curves to enhance the uniqueness of this doghouse.

Log Cabin Doghouse

This style is pretty good-looking, but I bet it is heavy! This may look best if you live in a log cabin and you could match it to your home.

If you sealed the gaps between each log the wood itself may have enough of an insulating factor to consider this doghouse insulated.

This reminds me of Lincoln Logs that many boys had when they were younger. You could even use the Lincoln Log theme to customize the doghouse.

Simple Doghouse

Simple Doghouse

This is your typical doghouse, just like Snoopy’s. It is what I think of when I hear the word doghouse.

This style has more headroom than an A-frame style and it is easier to cut out the materials. The majority of all doghouses are a variation of this simple doghouse.
