Summer Is Upon Us! – Is Your Dog Ready For Summer?

Ready or not summer is here, is your dog ready for summer? What! I need to get my dog ready for summer? While researching ways to keep your dog cool, I came across this paragraph in an article on WebMD. I felt it was important to share but did not fit in with the subject of my research.

Visit your vet. Keep his shots up to date, especially in summer. The parvo virus spreads in hot weather. And your dog probably spends more time outside, which means it’s more likely he could come into contact with a critter that has rabies. Summer is high season for fleas, which spread many diseases, and mosquitoes, which carry heartworm. Get him on regular meds to prevent these pests.

Now keeping our dogs up to date with their vaccinations is something we should already be doing. I along with many of you already know how bad ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes can be during the warmer parts of the year. Each pest can carry their own diseases and parasites all of which we need to protect ourselves and our pets from. I have never put much thought to the parvo virus or rabies. My wife and I purchased a Beagle puppy. That pour puppy had contracted parvo, we believe she got it from the place we bought her. But that is another story. That little puppy was in the fight of her life, our vet gave her a 20% chance of surviving. We had a wonderful vet, he took her home and nursed her back to health. Monday when we picked her up, he said she is a fighter and she was going to be okay. Now she was running our home and yard when she was sick, not one of our other dogs picked up the disease. Their vaccinations were current!

If you do not keep your pets up to date with their vaccinations, please consider the above information and get them to you local veterinary to get them updated!
