When The Unintentional Happens

Faux Bird House Decoration
If a fake birdhouse is used by birds, does it make it a real birdhouse?

My wife likes her decorations both inside and outside. Who doesn’t want their home to look nice? We have had this faux birdhouse for what seems like forever. It has had a few knocks and repairs and is ready for a major re-roofing job. Just a few days ago we evicted a wasp’s nest, the faux birdhouse is right by the front door. We can’t have those angry wasps flying around the front door.

Today my wife and I went out to lunch together. That’s always a nice treat since she works so far from home. While we were out our daughter Amy calls us and she is so excited she is just about screaming into the phone! Nova Luna was focused on the birdhouse and seemed to be trying to catch a couple of birds flying around the porch. Amy grabbed Nova Luna and put her inside the house. That is when she heard it… chirping? She look inside the birdhouse and saw the babies!

View From Inside
There they are! Are they not cute!

I never expected that a bird would build a nest inside this decoration… but they did. We never saw or heard anything when we removed the wasps. They must have been in there at the time we were killing wasps. I am only guessing that maybe the eggs had not hatched at the time. I wish I had a good webcam, I would set it up so we could observe the lives of these new little birds.

  1. Birds can be very stealthy!

We would occasionally check the progress of the chicks. One day they were gone! The nest was still in tack, so we do not think any animal got to them. The whole experience makes me want to put up a bunch of bird houses and web cams.
